Sometimes work is great, and sometimes the stress of work gets the better of us.
Do you know what I mean?
The good news is, with the help of 6 teeny tiny hacks, your workday can get so much better – even if you’re dreading it when that !@#& alarm goes off…
1. Start with the task you dread
Is there one thing on your to-do list that strikes fear into your heart?
Great, let’s start with that! You’ll feel so good once it’s checked off your list that you’ll be buzzing with energy all day, without the monster looming over you. You may hate me now, but you’ll love me later.
2. Use the Pomodoro Technique
Sometimes, you can get so overwhelmed just thinking about everything you need to do, that you find yourself in work paralysis unable to focus on anything at all.
To fight this, try out the Pomodoro Technique.
- Work hyper-productively for a short burst (try 25 minutes), followed by a 5 minute break.
- Set a timer, and the sense of urgency will help you get as much done as possible in that time frame.
- Repeat until you’ve completed your to-dos for the day – and don’t forget to treat yo’self after.
3. Think outside of the box
Always do your work calls at the same desk where you sit all day?
Try taking client calls whilst going for a walk round the block. You’ll get some fresh air and an extra boost of energy, and the change of scene will help to boost your creative problem solving skills.
4. Go old-school
Technology may have changed our work lives for the better, but laptops come with a whole mountain of distractions.
Ever opened up your Internet browser to quickly search something, and accidentally ended up reading 300 articles on how to be productive? (Oh, the irony). Next time you need to brainstorm, try using a notebook and pen instead: it’s more Instagrammable, and you might just find your productivity levels soar.
5. Sneak in some self-care
Need something to look forward to during the workday?
Plan in some self-care at your desk to keep yourself in tip-top shape. Try lighting your favourite candle, rubbing some aromatherapy oils on your hands, or do a 2 minute guided meditation.
Working in a positive environment surrounded by things that make you happy will help ensure you’re in the right mindset to #smash your goals.
6. Prep for tomorrow
There’s a reason why Mark Zuckerberg and Steve Jobs wear the same thing every day. Knowing exactly what you’re going to wear means your brain doesn’t have to waste precious energy making decisions early in the morning.
Follow suit, and prepare for your workday the night before. Pack your bag, check the weather to see if you’ll need an umbrella, and lay out your outfit (yes, even the socks). You’ll get into bed knowing everything’s ready for the next day, and when morning comes, you can slip into your outfit ready to seize the day.
