From overwhelmed starter to confident entrepreneur – FastForwardAmy Show Episode 90

August 10, 2021 By fastforwardamy Leave a Comment

“I don't know enough to start.” “I don't know if anyone will actually want to buy from me.” “Maybe I need to follow another course to learn more first.”

If any of these statements ring true to you, keep reading because today, we're going to tackle some of the mindset blocks holding you back.

Maybe you're thinking about offering a new type of service to people, creating a mastermind program, or starting a new business venture.

Whatever you want to do, you probably think you need to follow a gazillion courses before you can start. The short answer is: you don't!

When I got into fitness coaching, I was terrified at first because I knew there were so many other people out there who knew more than me… and honestly, why would anyone pick me?

It scared me, and just like you, I thought I had to travel the world and attend countless conferences before I could start.

BUT what I've discovered over the years is that I've learned so much more from actually doing my job and working with clients than from any of the courses I've ever taken.

Whatever is holding you back, it's all in your head, so let's look at 3 pointers to change your mindset that will help you get going!

Pointer 1: You don't need to know it all yet

When I started my fitness coaching business, I was scared shitless. It wasn't until my brother, Timothy, gave me permission to go ahead that I felt confident enough to really start my own venture.

Tip: Be one step ahead of your clients; it's enough

You only need to be one step ahead of other people to help them. Even if you don't know steps 2 to 10, you already know the first step, and your potential clients don't.

I get why you think you need to be further ahead, but the sweet thing about only being a few steps ahead of your potential clients is this: it will be much easier to put yourself in their mindset and that's an important quality when you want to get clients to take action and buy into what you're offering.

Tip: Start with what you know

Let's say you're a photographer who wants to teach new photographers how to get clients. Based on your experience, you know how to fill up your client roster, but don't know how to scale to a million-dollar business yet. That's fine. You can always keep learning and growing, but start with what you know.

No one knows it all, and it's OK to not know something.

If you get a question from a client and you don't have the answer right away; it's OK. Tell them you'll come back on this question. Following this approach, you'll automatically

  1. Learn the stuff you need instead of blindly learning more and more, hoping that you can put it to use someday
  2. Grow together with your clients. Remember, it's your duty to help other people grow with you.

Pointer 2: It doesn't have to be perfect

Whenever I look at my first fitness coaching programs, masterminds, and other course materials I have created during the past 6 years, I cringe.

Heck, I look at things I created 6 months ago, and I cringe. The thing is, it's never going to be perfect, and it doesn't have to be.

Tip: Learn from doing the work and improve

You'll learn so much more from doing the work than by thinking about the work. It's by actually doing the work that you'll be able to tell what's good and what's even better!

Whatever you're hesitant about, be that your website, pricing, content, service or product, none of these items have to be perfect.

Tip: Focus on the 80/20 rule

Here, look at what moves the needle. The 80/20 rule applies to the input you put in your business, but it also applies to the output you provide to clients.

The 80/20 rule is a law of nature and applies to basically any area of your business; sales, content creation, and so on. The rule goes like this: 20% of your input will determine 80% of your output.

Now, I don't want you to only spend 20% of the time on things that are taking your business forward, but you must also look at the other things you're doing. For instance, can you bring those activities to being 80% ‘good enough'?

It's so easy to get caught up in details. I know this because I'm a recovering perfectionist, but you need to learn to let go. At 80%, you need to be OK with what you have. It's never going to be exactly it. So remember:

Let it go and be OK with 80%. Good enough is good enough! And to get to this point, it all starts with you deciding to take action.

For example, offering your first fitness video course, the audio and video quality might not be top-notch, and the same goes for the accompanying hand-outs. It's fine. The most important thing is that what you teach moves the needle for your CUSTOMERS. If you can get someone who isn't working out to get moving 10 minutes every day, you have already won. Your product did its job.

Now, what does that mean for you?

Tip: Don't postpone future success

Let's be honest, you'll dislike your products or anything you put out in the past. It's supposed to be like that. But if you start in 6 months or a year from now, the same thing is going to happen. You'll cringe at the sight of your past content.

Start now to avoid finding yourself in a situation where you postponed future success. Instead of hunting perfectionism in your business, hunt imperfection and improve along the way.

Pointer 3: Other people will do better than you

You'll hate me for saying this, but the reality is that other people will do better than you. But they will never BE YOU.

I remember looking at Marie Forleo's content and thinking, “Wow, I'll never be able to create anything like that, to do what she does, or look the way she looks.”

And baby, this is the magical part. It doesn't matter what level you're at, YOU ARE YOU.

For instance, there are not two Formula 1 drivers that are the same, and that's what makes them so unique. That's what makes the top Formula 1 teams battle to get the driver and the contract.

Remember, other people will do better than you, but they're not you. In time you might be able to surpass them and take their position because you're different.

Tip: Focus on the next step, not the next 10

Seeing others ahead of you can easily cause overwhelm. Start where you're at, focus on the next step only, not the next 10, and do everything your unique way.

It's like being pregnant with your first child and already thinking about giving birth to your second and third child (haha, lol… you get my point, right?), don't do that!

Tip: Pretend you're ready

I know you feel like you need to know it all, but the truth is, you're never going to feel or be ready. You can only pretend. So go ahead, pretend you're ready, and show up as you.

You have my permission to go for it if you solemnly vow to help other people and improve as you learn. Go for it; you owe it to yourself and to your future clients!

RECAP: Start before you're ready.

Whenever you start doubting yourself or whenever you feel like what you have to offer isn't ‘good enough', remember that you'll never feel ready. You will get ready by actually doing it. Action is power! And yes, you do know enough to get started.

You've got this. These 3 key pointers will help you along the way to change your mindset. Screenshot and save them to the notes on your phone.

  1. You don't need to know it all; start with what you do know. Being one step ahead of your potential clients is enough.
  2. It doesn't have to be perfect; hunt imperfection and improve as you go. Don't postpone your future success.
  3. Other people will do better than you, but never be you. Pretend you're ready and go ahead. You owe it to yourself and to your future clients.
