How to Stop Overthinking and Make Fast Decisions in Your Business – The Fail To Win Podcast Episode 272

January 28, 2025 By fastforwardamy Leave a Comment

In the world of business, speed is often your best friend. The faster you can make decisions, the faster you can move your business forward. But for many entrepreneurs, making quick decisions isn’t easy. The constant pressure to get things “right” often leads to decision paralysis — that overwhelming feeling where you can’t seem to make any progress because you’re stuck trying to make the perfect choice.

If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. In today’s episode, I share how I went from overthinking every business decision to making fast, impactful choices that push my business forward. I dive deep into decision paralysis, why it holds so many entrepreneurs back, and most importantly, how to break free from it.

In this post, we’ll go over the key takeaways from the episode and the actionable steps you can take right now to make faster decisions, avoid overthinking, and achieve greater success in your business.

The Dangers of Decision Paralysis

Decision paralysis is one of the most common challenges I see entrepreneurs face. You know the feeling — you're overwhelmed by all the choices in front of you, and instead of making any decisions, you freeze. You might be stuck on which product to launch, what platform to use, how to price your offer, or even who to target. This endless cycle of decision-making can lead to a lack of progress and missed opportunities.

When you’re in a constant state of overthinking, it can feel like you’re not getting anywhere. You waste time, lose momentum, and most importantly, delay the growth of your business. The truth is, overthinking often kills progress. It stops you from moving forward, which is why it’s so important to learn how to break free from this mental trap.

Why Speed Matters in Business

One of the main points I discuss in the episode is how success favors speed. The most successful entrepreneurs I’ve worked with or studied are excellent at making quick decisions. And it's not because they don’t care about getting things right; it’s because they know that taking action — even imperfect action — is better than doing nothing at all.

When you make decisions quickly, you gain momentum. You start building and learning, which is far more valuable than sitting in indecision. Speed enables you to test, adapt, and grow in real-time. The faster you decide, the faster you learn and grow.

So, how can you make faster decisions without the fear of making a mistake? The answer lies in focusing on your end goal.

The One Question That Changes Everything: What’s Your End Goal?

One of the most powerful tools I’ve learned to use when making decisions is focusing on my end goal. Instead of getting bogged down by a million different questions, I ask myself one simple question: What do I want to achieve here?

Let’s say you’re working on launching a new product. You might feel stuck between deciding whether to create a video course or an eBook. Instead of overthinking each option, ask yourself: “What’s my end goal?”

Once you identify your end goal, it becomes much easier to break down the decision into smaller, more manageable questions without getting distracted. And that brings me to the next important point.

Breaking Down Your Decisions into Smaller Questions

When you’re faced with multiple decisions at once, the overwhelm can easily paralyze you. Should you price your product at $100 or $500? Do you need to include videos, or can you just have written content? Who do you target — moms or young women? All of these questions can feel huge and insurmountable. But here’s the trick: don’t try to make all the decisions at once.

Break it down into smaller questions.

Let’s take the example of creating an online course. Instead of thinking about everything at once, here’s how you can break it down:

  1. Who is my target audience?
(Answer: Women, specifically mothers, because they’re the ones with the biggest pain point in this area.)
  2. What’s my goal with this course?
(Answer: To make my first $1,000 and get feedback from real customers.)
  3. What type of content does my audience prefer?
(Answer: 70% of people are more visual, so video content is the best option.)
  4. How much should I price the course?
(You can find examples of pricepoints for different digital formats here.)

By breaking down your decisions this way, it’s easier to make one choice at a time without feeling overwhelmed. Plus, you’ll be able to move forward quickly, rather than staying stuck in indecision.

The Power of Fast Action

Now, let’s talk about how fast action plays a huge role in decision-making. When I launched my business, I didn’t have all the answers. I didn’t know exactly what would work, but I knew one thing for sure: I had to start.

When I didn’t know how to do something, I experimented. I made mistakes, but I learned from them quickly. And guess what? I made more money, attracted more clients, and grew my brand faster than I would have if I had waited until everything was perfect.

Think about it: You can always refine your processes later. The most important thing is to start. And remember, every time you make a decision and take action, you gain valuable insights that will guide you in your next decision.

Teaching Your Team to Make Fast Decisions

As your business grows, you’ll eventually need to teach your team how to make decisions quickly as well. As a business owner, you’re the one leading by example. Your team will look to you for guidance when they need to make decisions, and if you’re stuck in indecision, they’ll follow suit.

One of the best things I did as a leader was teach my team how to break down decisions by focusing on the end goal. We didn’t get bogged down by every little detail — instead, we kept moving forward, and that’s why we’ve been able to scale successfully.

Actionable Tips for Overcoming Decision Paralysis

Here are some actionable tips you can implement right now to get out of decision paralysis:

  1. Identify Your End Goal First: Start by focusing on what you truly want to achieve. This will make decision-making easier and more purposeful.
  2. Break Decisions into Smaller Questions: Instead of overthinking everything at once, tackle one question at a time.
  3. Use Speed to Your Advantage: The faster you make decisions, the faster you’ll learn and grow. Don’t wait for the perfect moment — take action!
  4. Teach Your Team to Make Quick Decisions: If you have a team, make sure they’re aligned with your decision-making process. Teach them how to focus on the end goal and make decisions without overthinking.
  5. Use Tools to Help You Plan: Having a clear plan, like my 2025 Planner, can help you stay organized and make decisions faster.
