Are you aware of how much your mindset impacts what YOU think you can accomplish? There’s a huge difference between playing to win and playing not to lose. In this episode, I'm explaining the differences, discussing how each one impacts your business, and teaching you how to flip that mindset around so you can reach your full potential.
What it means to play not to lose
There was a period, a few months ago, when I was constantly experiencing disappointment because my team seemed to be dropping the ball here and there.
So, I was faced with problems that needed to be solved and it frustrated me. I was sad these mistakes were being made and frustrated because I wanted to do better as a whole.
When you’re experiencing negativity, it’s quite easy to start spiraling and to get into a very pessimistic headspace where you don’t feel like anything will ever be alright again.
But do you know what happens when you focus solely on problems? You’ll only create more. In comparison to when you focus on goals, you’ll find solutions to reach those goals.
Aim your energy towards your goals
This darker period made me realize I was fully playing not to lose instead of playing to win, and I realized I needed to change that up. Otherwise, I’d never be able to accomplish the things I had in mind.
I made the time to write down my goals, to get clear again on what I was working for. In the grand scheme of things, small mistakes don’t make a difference. As a business coach, I preach that you should always go for perfectly imperfect action but once I started growing and building a name for myself, I felt like this didn’t apply to me anymore.
But it does. You’re human and so am I, so it’s only natural that mistakes might slip through the cracks. Perfect doesn’t exist and how boring of a world would we be living in, if it did?
Stay small and keep your feet on the ground
The hard thing about learning how to play to win is that it’s not inherently built into us as people. From a young age, we’re taught to stay small and to be humble because aiming too high is simply ridiculous.
While on the other hand, we’re pushed to our maximum capabilities when all we hear around us ‘you won’t be able to make it’.
Being surrounded with this kind of energy is nothing but demotivating, because you won’t want to give it your all if you won’t be able to achieve your goal anyway.
Assuming you’ll fail results in you not taking action at all, so set an achievable goal instead of setting the bar so high you’ll never be able to reach it.
Start by playing to win
Assume the win and remember that your win might not be the same as another person’s, we’re all striving for something different. Stop being too realistic and dare to aim high and dream big, because what if you actually won at the things you tried?
Instead of throwing in the towel prematurely, get in the ring and fight for you victory. Playing to win could mean you’re doing the things that make you feel kind of uncomfortable, like posting that video on Tik Tok or going live on Instagram.
Growth will never be comfortable, they don’t call it growing pains for nothing. Playing to win is putting things in motion for your business, so you’re able to grow.
