Take Charge of Your Future: Plan Your Year with these 4 Effective Goal-Setting Strategies – FastForwardAmy Show Episode 58

December 29, 2020 By fastforwardamy Leave a Comment

We’re so close to kicking off a new year. Hurray for 2021!

As we say goodbye to 2020, I want to use today’s episode to review the past year together with you.

And yes, I know this will be one of the most famous topics that will appear in the upcoming weeks, but only until everyone gives up.

But that’s NOT going to be you. Because today we’re going to create a new path—for you and me—to look into the next year and crush our goals!

Are you with me?

Don’t be afraid of setting goals

If there’s something my brothers and I disagree on, it’s motivational quotes and new year’s resolutions. I absolutely love them because I loooooove setting goals.

Not everyone is like this. Typically, there are two kinds of people. Some focus on the ‘how‘ and the process, while others focus on the outcome and the results. Surprise….I’m the last one!

Goal setting is a self-fulfilling prophecy. It’s a way to attract the things you want and send it out into the universe to ultimately get it back!

Make your goals very specific

A lot of people are afraid of setting goals because they have disappointed themselves in the past. Consequently, they are scared to set new goals, especially numeric ones.

For instance, often we say we want more sales, more followers, and more time for ourselves, but we don’t put a number on it.

You need to be more specific with your goals. Because when you keep naming your goals, you will hit them. So, envision your goals whether you’re struggling with your business or your life. It works a whole lot better when you’re specific.

To define your goals, you can take different routes. Some people like to use SMART goals, but I prefer another direction: set goals close to your core of what you really want and make them as specific as possible.

Once you set clear goals, it will be a lot easier to reach your goals. If you don’t, you won’t.

For instance, if you don’t have an address to a destination, you can’t find your way there. The same goes for goals. If you don’t have a goal, how are you going to find your path?

Therefore, be very specific on WHAT you want to achieve, so you can let go of that and focus on HOW to get there.

Ace your goals in 2021

If you’ve made it this far, it means you’re not afraid of setting goals. I love it!

To kick butt and ace your goals in 2021, I have prepared 4 small exercises I would like to do together with you. These exercises are used in my coaching programs, too, but I’m sharing them with you for free today.

#1 What were your goals?

It’s the end of the year, and to be honest, it has been a weird one. Still, I want you to ask yourself:

What were my goals the past year?

In other words, what did you set out to do in 2020? Also, look at the results. Did you achieve your goals?

#2 What went well?

Alright, you’ve outlined your goals for the past year. Great! Now, if we revisit those goals, choose one and ask yourself:

What went well?

To answer this question, I’m not talking about how well you reached your goals, but I want you to focus on the actions you took to getting there. What did you DO well?

#3 What could have gone better?

So far, we’ve looked at your past goals and what went well. Now, it’s time to ask yourself:

What could I have done better?

I want you to ask yourself this question to help cultivate an analytical mindset, so you can look at how you can reach your goals better to optimize for the future.

In other words, look at what you can change and analyze what you want to do differently. It’s an iterative process of working, and here is where the real magic lies!

Define for yourself what you did and what you could have done better. Again, focus on your actions. For instance, instead of only posting once a week on Instagram, you could have made time to batch your posts.

#4 Revisit your goals

The last exercise I want to do with you is to revisit our goals and choose one together. What’s the first thing that comes to your mind? Choose that one. Next up, I want you to follow the steps below.

  1. Grab a piece of paper and create two columns.
  2. On the left side, write your biggest wins from the past year.
  3. On the right side, write everything you did to get to those wins or the things that took up most of your time.
  4. Connect your actions to your biggest wins.

After doing this, you’ll have a clear overview of the things you did to achieve your goals. You will know WHAT you did and HOW you got there.

What you’ll see is that there are some things or some actions that actually move the needle. It can be in your business, but also privately. Circle these actions and reuse them when possible to outline the steps you’re going to take to get closer to your new goals.

If your actions proved successful in the past, chances are they will get you far the second time around, too. And remember, no matter the steps you take to reaching your goals, they don’t necessarily happen following a straightforward linear process. That’s OK!

Do what makes your heart leap

Hopefully, these exercises will help you ace your goals in 2021. I’m definitely going to use them.

The most important thing I want you to remember is this.

Dare to set your goals even if you’ve disappointed yourself in the past. Forgive yourself for not hitting those goals, try again, and trust that you’ll always do your best to achieve what sets your soul on fire!

If you don’t know where to start with your goals or struggle to name your goals, ask yourself what makes your heart leap. Suddenly, you will know!

Good luck and happy new year!
